Marzano - Essential Nine (High Yield) Strategies
According to research, summarizing is the #2 strategy that impacts student achievement.
Summarizing is done by each student at the end of and throughout the lesson. It is a learning strategy
that assists the teacher in gathering evidence of student learning.
Hey everyone! The focus this week is on vocabulary strategies and incorporating flashcards in your instruction.
The amount of vocabulary students have to learn in each class might honestly surprise you. I used flashcards for each unit when teaching. Many teachers ask what do you do when students say that they have don't need them or just don't do them. I found when I incorporated flashcards in my instruction, I had more "takers." One thought is that you have students write the word on one side and a visual or clue on the other to avoid copying the book definitions!

Strengthening Connections between math and literacy - Math Journaling ideas
Strengthening student connections between mathematics and other content areas as well as aspects of their lives helps children improve both their literacy and their mathematical skills. Allowing them to read, write and draw about their knowledge does just that. In this News and Notes I have highlighted seven easy strategies that help bridge literacy and mathematics shared by Jennifer Altieri in a recent article in Teaching Children Mathematics (NCTM) magazine. Use the examples to spark discussion among your group of teachers. And I encourage you to brainstorm even more ideas for connecting literacy and mathematics in your classrooms !!

Hey everyone! I guess another busy week is ahead. Summarizing strategies will be the focus for our training and tips this month. The Tip of the Week #5 combines reading comprehension, note taking, summarizing and getting students to form their own questions!
