Author Adrian Fogelin was invited to do a creative writing workshop at Frey Elementary on September 18th and 19th. The workshop was a HUGE success. The students were completely engaged as they learned practical strategies for building characters in their writing. I am certain that the kids will have a renewed interest and excitement for writing as a result of their time with Ms. Fogelin!
1. Teachers prepared by reading aloud two of her novels and by delving into her books for examples of good writing.
2. The author used shoes as a means to draw students to make inferences in order to build characters. To begin, she held up one pair of interesting shoes and asked the students questions such as the following:
- How old is this person?
- What are his/her dreams?
- Does he/she have money?
- If you walked into his/her home, what would be the first thing that you'd see?
- What smells might you smell in his/her home?
- What sounds might you hear?
- Where might we meet this character for the first time?
- What does this character want most on the world?
- What is getting in his/her way?
- What is he/she most afraid of?
3. The author then picked up various shoes to quickly brainstorm characters using the questions above. The students were totally engaged with hands up in the air to share their many ideas!
4. The author then gave each child a unique photo of a person or place and a name. Their task was to build a character by answering all of the above questions.
5. After sharing some of their initial ideas whole group, the kids were asked to write a paragraph that introduced their character. The room was silent as the students were anxious to get their thoughts on paper!
